Miscommunication
This autobiographical painting features the artist and her two Italian Greyhounds submerged in a pool of fabric of unknown depth. The three exist just below the surface of semi-transparent water. The figure is holding a rotary phone to her ear while she’s twisting and pulling away from it. The wrapped cord around her arm suggests a type of self-imposed psychological shackle. She seems unaware of the physical break in the cord. The hand rests above the switch hook, on the edge of hanging up. The positioning is provocative. Both dogs rest comfortably, suggesting a long conversation, yet look to the figure impatiently, waiting for it to end. Above the water’s surface is the hand, phone, and cord; they act as a type of lifebuoy. Tortured yet nostalgic, the composition is reminiscent of 90s magazine spreads.
